THE Czech car maker Skoda Auto has launched its premium sports utility vehicle, Yeti, on November 15. The vehicle is available in two trims, Ambiente at 15.4 lakhs and Elegance at 16.62 lakhs, exshowroom Delhi.

The vehicle comes loaded with features even in the base variant, with features like alloy wheels, hill hold control, ABS, ESP, Dual airbags, active head restraints, and glove box cooling in the base variant. The higher end variant gets new set of alloys, corner function with fog lights, side and curtain airbags, steering audio controls, climatronic dual zone AC etc in addition.

It sports a 2.0 litre diesel engine producing 140 bhp of power at 4200 rpm and 320 Nm of raw torque at 1750-2500rpm. It has all time 4 wheel drive with 6 speed manual transmission, dual disc brakes and an electro mechanically assisted steering. At 4223 mm long, 1793 mm wide and 1691 mm tall and a turning circle radius of 5m,it has all the proportions to be a perfect city car as well.

The compact SUV that would take on the likes of Ford Endeavour , Mitsubishi Outlander and Maruti Grand Vitara and also the high end Tata Aria would be assembled at Skoda’s Aurangabad plant in Maharashtra. One of the smallest SUVs in size, Yeti will be powered by a two litre common rail direct injection diesel engine with manual transmission and a standard all four-wheel drive system. It will have six airbags. The vehicle, a so-called off-roader that can traverse rough terrain, will also have a feature that help it drive on mountain roads.

Skoda Auto has customised the vehicle for the Indian market by improving the suspension to meet the harsh road conditions across the country.

“We are looking at offering the smoothness of car like drive while maintaining the toughness associated with an European SUV in the Yeti. We have adopted the ‘rough road package’ in the vehicle to make it compatible for local Indian conditions, as the original vehicle is more suitable for Europe and other markets,” a senior Skoda Auto executive said.

The demand for SUV has lately picked up in the Indian market after the runaway success of Toyota Fortuner of which more than 10,000 units have been sold since its launch in August 2009 and Hyundai Santa Fe receiving booking for one full year in just 12 days.
